Mental health is often treated separately from physical health, even though the two are deeply connected. Recognizing that gap is more important…

Mental health is often treated separately from physical health, even though the two are deeply connected. Recognizing that gap is more important than ever as families and communities navigate rising levels of stress, anxiety, and isolation. For Wellpoint New Jersey President Dr. Patrick Fox, the focus begins with behavioral health and the role it plays in how people think, feel, connect, and move through daily life.

“Health is about more than being free from disease,” Dr. Fox said. “It encompasses an individual’s physical, emotional, spiritual, and relational health, and ensures that they maintain strong social connections and that their basic needs are met.”

His perspective is shaped by a career rooted in mental health care. Dr. Fox is a psychiatrist who has worked at both the community level and within larger behavioral health systems, giving him a broad view of care across settings. After beginning medical school with an interest in surgery, he shifted his focus toward mental health policy, law, and bioethics, later completing a fellowship in forensic psychiatry at Yale and serving on the faculty.

Today, that experience shapes how he views health and well-being. It is not limited to diagnoses or treatment. It reflects how people experience daily life, including how they manage stress, maintain relationships, respond to challenges, and how social and economic conditions shape those experiences.

At Wellpoint New Jersey, that focus is reflected in how care is delivered, integrating behavioral and physical health services while addressing pressing social needs such as housing, food access, and employment.

That understanding is especially important as mental health challenges become more common. Nationally, more than 1 in 5 adults lives with a mental illness each year, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. In New Jersey, the National Alliance on Mental Illness estimates that approximately 1.1 million adults live with a mental health condition.

Connection plays a central role in shaping this reality and is often where challenges begin to surface.

“Humans are a highly social species. Our sense of self and of security and well-being is rooted in our connections with others,” Dr. Fox said. “In today’s digital age, we have unprecedented access to information and constant connectivity, yet many people feel increasingly disconnected and isolated from meaningful interpersonal relationships.”

That disconnect has had lasting effects. “We’re essentially experiencing a mental health epidemic, particularly with our youth, and we’re now seeing the consequences of that period of isolation,” Dr. Fox said, referring to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He emphasizes that mental health challenges are a shared part of the human experience.

“At some point in everyone’s life they will struggle with a mental health challenge,” Dr. Fox said. “It is something we all have in common to varying degrees. Acknowledging this can reduce stigma and elicit empathy and support.”

We all have a part to play in the well-being of others. Simple gestures such as a friendly greeting or asking someone how they are doing can help people feel connected and cared about. Shifts in mood, sleep, behavior, or social withdrawal can be early indicators that someone may need support. Recognizing these changes and expressing care and concern is often the first step to accessing help and support.

Mental Health Awareness Month is an opportunity to shift how we think about mental health and remind people that they are not alone.

“We all have times in our lives when we struggle,” Dr. Fox said. “If you or someone you know is experiencing a difficult time, reach out. Help is available.”

Georgia Foster Care System Faces Urgent Need for Mental Health Supports Georgia’s foster care system plays a vital role in providing care and stability…

Georgia Foster Care System Faces Urgent Need for Mental Health Supports

Georgia’s foster care system plays a vital role in providing care and stability for children and adolescents who have experienced trauma. However, ensuring the overall well-being of these youth requires accessible and quality mental health services for them and their families.

As the director of Georgia Families 360° (GF360), a managed care program serving over 32,000 children, and behavioral health clinician myself, I understand the significance of prioritizing mental health support for families involved in the child welfare system. GF360 offers a range of resources and supports, including behavioral health, physical health, and services to address a family’s social drivers of health.

The Mental Health Crisis Facing Children in Foster Care

Children in foster care often come from backgrounds marked by abuse, neglect, and trauma, leading to a higher risk of mental health disorders like anxiety, depression, PTSD, and behavioral issues. Without adequate mental health support, these challenges can persist and negatively impact their overall well-being.

Early Intervention and Prevention are Critical

Early intervention and prevention are critical in mitigating the long-term effects of trauma and promoting healthy development. By identifying and addressing mental health concerns early on, we can implement appropriate interventions that improve emotional resilience, coping mechanisms, and successful integration into adulthood.

GF360’s Triage Team provides immediate and intensive care coordination, assessments, and screenings for each member upon entering care. We have also partnered with GoMo Health to offer early screening for autism for children up to age five and provide resources, support, and education for families, aiding them in reaching their fullest potential.

Enhanced Mental Health Supports Increases Stability and Improved Placement Outcomes

Comprehensive mental health support increases stability and improves placement outcomes for children. Equipping foster parents, adoptive parents, and caregivers with the necessary tools and resources enables them to meet the unique needs of each child. This leads to improved placement stability, reduced disruption rates in homes and schools, and increased opportunities for adoption or reunification with biological families.

GF360 has established stepdown home partnerships with organizations like Chris 180 and Murphy Harpst, where adults serve as live-in care providers to create a safe and stable environment for youth transitioning from inpatient facilities back to the community.

Empower Caregivers

Supporting mental health in foster care extends to caregivers who play a pivotal role in providing day-to-day care and support. By equipping them with training, resources, support, and access to mental health professionals, we enhance their ability to address the emotional needs of the children in their care. Knowledgeable caregivers can create a safe and supportive environment that promotes positive emotional well-being and helps children overcome trauma.

GF360’s Education and Training team regularly holds online events for parents and caregivers, and our Steering Committee includes foster and adoptive parents who provide valuable guidance in aligning the program with the needs of those we serve. We have also launched Esteem, an app-based program designed to provide caregivers with tools and resources to support children with ADHD.

Partner with the Community

Building effective mental health support for children in foster care requires collaboration among government agencies, child welfare organizations, mental health professionals, educators, and the wider community. By forging strong partnerships and sharing resources and expertise, Georgia can establish a robust support network that addresses the unique mental health needs of children in foster care, removes barriers to access, and ensures a successful continuum of care from placement to adulthood.

GF360 regularly convenes multiple committees with members experienced in various aspects of the foster care system to obtain first-hand feedback on how our policies and procedures impact our members. By addressing the mental health needs of this vulnerable population, we can provide them with the tools, support, and hope they need to heal, thrive, and achieve their fullest potential.

UNION, N.J. — Wellpoint has established the Wellpoint Health Research Award Endowment at Kean University to support student research focused on…

UNION, N.J. — Wellpoint has established the Wellpoint Health Research Award Endowment at Kean University to support student research focused on Black maternal and infant health through the John S. Watson Institute for Urban Policy and Research.

The award will empower Kean students to conduct research that expands knowledge and advocacy in a critical public health area while informing policy that affects communities within Kean’s footprint and beyond.

Dr. Patrick Fox, CEO of Wellpoint New Jersey, said the investment reflects the organization’s commitment to improving health outcomes in urban communities through partnerships with institutions like Kean.

“Advancing equitable healthcare requires collaboration and innovation,” Fox said. “Through our partnership with Kean University, we are supporting student research that deepens understanding of maternal and infant health disparities and helps drive solutions that strengthen communities.”

The $50,000 endowment at the Kean University Foundation creates an annual award for a junior, senior or graduate student with a minimum 3.0 GPA majoring in biological sciences, statistical science, public health or sociology. Recipients will work with the Watson Institute team on project-based research that explores pressing public health challenges, including reproductive health and maternal and child health.

“We are grateful for Wellpoint’s investment in our students and in the important work taking place at the John S. Watson Institute,” said Kean President Lamont O. Repollet, Ed.D. “This endowment will empower our students to pursue research that addresses health disparities, while advancing Kean’s mission of fostering meaningful public impact.”

The research supported by the award will contribute to the Watson Institute’s ongoing work to analyze issues affecting urban communities and translate findings into policy insights. By engaging students directly in applied research, the initiative expands opportunities for experiential learning while helping address urgent public health challenges.

Dr. Michael James ’98 of Wellpoint said the partnership highlights the growing reach of Kean’s academic and research initiatives. James serves on the Board of Directors at Wenzhou-Kean University, which is Kean’s campus in China.

“Kean continues to expand its impact through innovative research and global collaboration,” James said. “Supporting students who are working on issues as important as maternal and infant health demonstrates how universities can help generate knowledge that benefits communities locally and far beyond campus.”

Joseph Youngblood II, Ph.D., chancellor for Kean Ocean and Kean Global, who oversees the Watson Institute, noted that the award will strengthen the institute’s ability to involve students in research that informs public policy.

“The Watson Institute plays a vital role in connecting research to real-world policy challenges,” Youngblood said. “This award allows students to contribute directly to projects that examine health disparities and generate insights that can guide decision-makers and improve outcomes in communities.”

Wellpoint leaders visited Kean’s campus in early March to present the gift and celebrate the partnership.

DISC Health Equity Action Lab

Gout arthritis is a form of inflammatory arthritis that’s notorious for causing sudden, severe joint pain—often known as a gout flare-up. These gout flare-ups occur when high levels of uric acid in the blood lead to the formation of sharp crystals in the joints. While gout treatment typically includes medication, your diet plays a crucial role in preventing gout arthritis symptoms. By understanding which foods can trigger a gout flare-up and which can help, you can take proactive steps toward better joint health and more effective gout treatment.

The Link Between Purines, Uric Acid, and Gout Arthritis

The relationship between gout arthritis and your diet is rooted in purines—a natural chemical compound found in both your body’s cells and many foods. When your body breaks down purines, uric acid is produced as a byproduct. If uric acid accumulates, it can lead to gout arthritis symptoms or trigger a gout flare-up.

Normally, your kidneys filter out uric acid, but if your body produces too much uric acid or your kidneys don’t eliminate it efficiently, uric acid builds up in the bloodstream. This condition, called hyperuricemia, increases the risk of uric acid crystals forming in the joints and causing a gout flare-up. Maintaining a low-purine diet is a highly recommended gout treatment approach, as it helps reduce uric acid levels and the frequency of gout arthritis attacks.

High-Purine Foods to Limit or Avoid for Gout Arthritis

Managing gout arthritis starts by recognizing and avoiding high-purine foods, which can increase uric acid and trigger a gout flare-up. Sticking to a gout treatment plan means paying attention to dietary choices that may contribute to gout flare-ups.

Top Foods and Drinks to Watch Out For:

Organ Meats: Liver, kidneys, sweetbreads, and tripe are extremely high in purines and are among the top culprits for a gout flare-up in people with gout arthritis.

Red Meat: Keep intake of beef, lamb, and pork low to reduce gout flare-up risk.

Game Meats: Venison, goose, and duck can also spark a gout flare-up.

Certain Seafood: Fish and shellfish like anchovies, sardines, herring, mussels, scallops, codfish, haddock, and tuna should be limited as part of any gout treatment plan.

Sugary Foods and Drinks: Foods and beverages sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup can trigger a gout flare-up. This includes sodas, juices, and processed snacks, all of which should be moderated for effective gout treatment.

Alcohol: Beer is especially problematic for anyone with gout arthritis since it’s high in purines and hinders the body’s ability to expel uric acid, often causing a gout flare-up. Other alcoholic drinks can complicate gout treatment, too.

Yeast: Nutritional yeast, brewer’s yeast, and yeast extracts (found in gravies and sauces) also contribute to a higher risk of gout flare-ups in individuals managing gout arthritis.

Diets and Foods That Help Fight Gout Arthritis

While reducing certain foods is important, adopting a diet that supports gout treatment and reduces gout flare-up frequency is essential for managing gout arthritis.

General Dietary Guidelines for Gout Arthritis Management:

Stay Hydrated: Drinking at least eight glasses of water daily is a simple but effective strategy for controlling gout arthritis. Hydration supports the kidneys in flushing uric acid, helping prevent a gout flare-up and supporting your gout treatment.

Embrace Fruits and Vegetables: Most fruits and vegetables are low in purines, making them a staple for gout arthritis management and reducing gout flare-up risks.

Choose Lean Proteins: Plant-based proteins, low-fat dairy, and moderate amounts of poultry align well with a gout treatment plan by limiting purine intake.

Select Whole Grains: Whole grains such as rice, pasta, and cereals support overall health while keeping your gout arthritis in check. Be mindful of oats, which are slightly higher in purines and could provoke a gout flare-up.

Specific Foods That May Help With Gout Arthritis:

Cherries: Studies show cherries have anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce uric acid and lower the risk of a gout flare-up, benefiting those with gout arthritis.

Skim Milk: Low-fat dairy, especially skim milk, is associated with reduced uric acid levels and inflammation, making it a solid addition to any gout treatment.

Coffee: Drinking coffee is linked to decreased uric acid in the blood and may help lower the chances of a gout flare-up. This makes coffee a helpful beverage for people with gout arthritis as part of a balanced gout treatment.

Vitamin C-Rich Foods: Consuming foods high in vitamin C, such as oranges and bell peppers, can offer additional support in reducing uric acid, thereby reducing the frequency of gout flare-ups and assisting gout arthritis management.

Managing gout arthritis is a long-term commitment, and adopting these dietary changes is a proactive aspect of gout treatment. By reducing high-purine foods, embracing a well-balanced eating plan, and focusing on choices that lower uric acid, you can decrease the likelihood of a gout flare-up and support gout arthritis health.

Breaking Promises: SSM Health's Shortfall in Minority Participation Goals

In the heart of St. Louis, a massive construction project promised to be a beacon of economic hope. The new $467 million SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital wasn't just about building a state-of-the-art medical facility; it was supposed to build wealth in the community through fair contracts for minority and women-owned businesses (M/WBEs).

However, recent projections reveal a disturbing reality. Instead of serving as a model for equitable development, the project is currently falling short of its promises by a staggering margin. SSM Health, the institution behind the project, is projecting a participation gap of $74 million against its contractual commitments. This isn't just a missed target; it is a significant blow to economic justice in the region.

The Promise: A Binding Agreement for Equity

When the Midtown Redevelopment Plan was established, it wasn't just a green light for construction. It came with strings attached—strings designed to pull up the local economy. The plan, codified in Ordinance 70428, included a Community Benefits Agreement (CBA). This agreement, signed by major stakeholders including the NAACP, Saint Louis University, and SSM Health, was meant to ensure that the massive investment in Midtown benefited everyone, not just a select few.

The CBA set clear, ambitious, but achievable goals for M/WBE participation. The target was 35% overall participation, amounting to approximately $163 million flowing directly to minority and women-owned firms. The breakdown of these goals was specific to ensure diverse inclusion:

African American Owned: 21% ($98.4 million)

Women-Owned: 11% ($51.3 million)

Hispanic Owned: 2% ($9.3 million)

Asian Owned: 0.5% ($2.3 million)

Native American Owned: 0.5% ($2.3 million)

These weren't just suggestions. They were formal commitments intended to address historical disparities in who gets to build St. Louis.

The Reality: A $74 Million Gap

Despite these clear benchmarks, the numbers coming out of the project paint a bleak picture. Current projections show that SSM Health is failing to meet these critical thresholds. The gap between the promise and the performance is approximately $74 million.

That is $74 million that should be circulating in minority communities, supporting local families, and growing small businesses. Instead, that capital is going elsewhere.

This shortfall has sparked outrage among community leaders. The NAACP St. Louis City Branch and the MOKAN Construction Contractors Assistance Center have raised alarms, pointing out that this failure undermines the very spirit of the redevelopment plan. In a letter to the St. Louis Development Corporation, the NAACP highlighted a "systemic failure to prioritize minority and women-owned business participation," calling it a contradiction of the institution's public claims of advancing social equity.

Why This Matters

Construction projects of this magnitude are rare. When they happen, they function as economic engines. For minority contractors, securing a portion of a half-billion-dollar project can be transformative. It allows businesses to scale up, hire more workers, and build the capacity to compete for even larger projects in the future.

When institutions fail to meet their M/WBE goals:

Wealth gaps widen: Minority businesses are locked out of wealth-building opportunities.

Trust erodes: The community loses faith in public-private partnerships and the institutions that claim to serve them.

Inequity persists: Systemic barriers remain unchallenged, perpetuating a cycle where the same established players win every contract.

Accountability vs. Excuses

SSM Health has responded to these concerns by citing financial stewardship. In correspondence with the NAACP, SSM Health representatives noted that as a mission-driven non-profit, they must balance inclusion goals with affordability. They argued that significant cost increases to meet participation levels would impact healthcare affordability. Furthermore, they suggested that the CBA is a "framework" rather than a binding agreement in the context of their specific project financing.

However, community advocates argue that equity should not be a line item that gets cut when budgets get tight. The NAACP and MOKAN contend that the CBA and city ordinances provide explicit enforcement mechanisms. They emphasize that receiving public support—whether through direct incentives, tax abatements, or the benefits of being part of a redevelopment district—comes with a responsibility to the public.

To accept the "financial stewardship" argument is to accept that minority participation is an optional luxury rather than a fundamental requirement of doing business in a diverse city.

The Call for Transparency

The community is no longer asking for favors; they are demanding compliance. The NAACP has called for:

Itemized Reporting: Updated utilization numbers by trade and contract value.

Clear Documentation: Proof of outreach and engagement efforts to find minority contractors.

Corrective Measures: A concrete plan to fix the shortfall before the project concludes.

This is a critical moment for St. Louis. If a $467 million project in the heart of the city cannot meet its diversity goals, it sets a dangerous precedent for all future development.

What You Can Do

The gap between a promise and a reality is closed by one thing: pressure. The community must stand together to demand transparency.

Stay Informed: Follow updates from the NAACP and MOKAN regarding this dispute.

Speak Up: Attend public meetings and press conferences to show your support for equitable development.

Demand Answers: Ask local officials how they are enforcing the Community Benefits Agreement in Midtown.

We cannot let $74 million in community wealth vanish without a fight. It is time to hold SSM Health to the standards they agreed to and ensure that when St. Louis builds, everyone grows.

Wellpoint DC started the new year by announcing it has been awarded NCQA Health Outcomes Accreditation and NCQA Community-Focused Care Accreditation—formerly Health Equity Accreditation and Health Equity Accreditation Plus—for its Medicaid health plan. Combined with its NCQA Health Plan Accreditation earned in October 2025, this distinction makes Wellpoint DC the first Medicaid managed care organization in Washington, D.C., to earn all three NCQA accreditations.

These two new accreditations come just three months after Wellpoint DC earned Full NCQA Health Plan Accreditation with a perfect score of 141 out of 141. By meeting NCQA’s rigorous standards across quality and equity, Wellpoint DC has demonstrated excellence in consumer protection and health outcomes, distinguishing itself as a leader among Medicaid plans in the District.

NCQA’s Health Outcomes Accreditation evaluates how well a health plan supports equal access to care, improves the member experience and works to remove barriers that affect health. NCQA’s Community-Focused Care Accreditation builds on that foundation by requiring health plans to collect detailed information about members’ non-medical needs and collaborate with community organizations to help address them. This includes providing support with social needs such as housing, food, transportation and other services. Together, these accreditations demonstrate that a health plan has strong systems in place to deliver fair, respectful and effective care for all members.

"Earning this additional NCQA recognition is a tremendous honor and a proof point that validates the quality of care Wellpoint DC works hard to deliver," said Adrian Jordan, President of Wellpoint DC. "We are proud to be the first Medicaid plan in the District to earn this distinction. It reflects the real work our team and partners do every day to connect members to care, resources and support that make a meaningful difference in their lives."

NCQA President Margaret E. O’Kane also praised Wellpoint DC’s accomplishment. "Racial and ethnic disparities have hindered quality healthcare progression for many Americans," said O’Kane. "Organizations earning the Community-Focused Care Accreditation, like Wellpoint DC, are leading the way in bridging this gap, and NCQA salutes their commitment."

During this Martin Luther King III live town hall, attendees will dive into the core questions posed in his book. How do we define success? How can we cultivate a "Beloved Community" in our own neighborhoods? The conversation will move beyond abstract concepts to discuss practical ways we can all contribute to a more just and compassionate society.

Inside the Book: What Is My Legacy?

The town hall centers on the themes of King's book, What Is My Legacy?. This work is a contemplative exploration of the footprints we leave behind. It is not an autobiography in the traditional sense, but rather a guide to living a life of significance.

The book challenges readers to shift their focus from personal accumulation to communal contribution. During the MLK III town hall, King will expand on these ideas, discussing:

The true meaning of purpose: Moving past career achievements to find spiritual and social fulfillment.

The power of connection: How building bridges between diverse groups strengthens our collective humanity.

Service over success: Why helping others is the ultimate metric of a life well-lived.

About the Speaker: A Lifetime of Advocacy

Understanding the man behind the microphone adds depth to the event. Martin Luther King III has spent his life amplifying the voices of the unheard. Born on October 23, 1957, he has seamlessly integrated his family's historic mission with contemporary human rights issues.

Key Accomplishments and Roles

Leadership: He served as the fourth president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) from 1997 to 2004, the very organization co-founded by his father.

Drum Major Institute: Currently, he leads the Drum Major Institute alongside his wife, Arndrea Waters King. This organization continues the struggle against poverty, racism, and violence.

Global Impact: His work is not confined to the United States. He has spearheaded nonviolence education workshops in conflict zones like Bosnia, India, and Israel/Palestine.

His dedication to the concept of the "Beloved Community" drives his work. This philosophy envisions a society based on justice, equal opportunity, and love of one's fellow human beings.

How to Participate in the Conversation

Participation is simple. By registering for the Martin Luther King III live town hall, you secure a front-row seat to this vital dialogue.

Preparing for the Event

To get the most out of the experience, consider reflecting on these questions beforehand:

What does "legacy" mean to you personally?

How can you incorporate more acts of service into your daily routine?

What barriers prevent you from connecting deeply with your community?

We also recommend visiting The King Center to learn more about the philosophy of nonviolence that underpins all of Martin Luther King III's work.

Conclusion: Join the Movement for Meaningful Change

The Martin Luther King III live town hall is an invitation to pause and reflect. In our busy lives, we rarely take the time to ask ourselves what we are truly building. Are we building a résumé, or are we building a legacy?

Don't miss this chance to be inspired by a global leader in human rights. Join the conversation on February 25, 2026, and take the first step toward defining your own legacy of love and service.

Eating healthy is important for overall well-being, but for many families in Georgia, cost and access can make it challenging. According to a 2024 national survey by Research America, nearly half of Americans say it is difficult to consistently access nutritious foods. Rising grocery prices, limited food options, and busy schedules can all make maintaining healthy choices harder over time.

Across Georgia, many households continue to face food insecurity. According to data from the Atlanta Community Food Bank, nearly one in seven Georgians experiences food insecurity, and almost one in five children is affected. These challenges show how deeply food access affects families and communities across the state and why practical, budget-friendly strategies matter. With a little planning and small, intentional choices, healthy eating can be achievable and sustainable.

Below are 10 ways to prioritize nutrition while staying on budget:

1. Plan Your Meals Before Shopping

Set aside time each week to plan simple breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. Building meals around ingredients you already have and checking store sales can help stretch your grocery dollars. This approach also reduces impulse purchases and supports balanced meals.

2. Shop With a List and Stick to It

Create a grocery list based on your meal plan and buy only what you need. Sticking to a list helps prevent overspending, reduces food waste, and limits last-minute purchases of processed convenience foods.

3. Frozen or Canned Produce Can Be Smart Alternatives

Frozen and canned fruits and vegetables can serve as healthy alternatives to fresh produce and are often more affordable. Choose frozen items without added sauces and canned produce packed in water or labeled “low sodium” or “no salt added.”

4. Buy in Bulk When It Makes Sense

Staples like brown rice, oats, whole wheat pasta, dried beans, and lentils often cost less per serving when purchased in larger quantities. Buy in bulk only when items can be used regularly or safely stored or frozen for later use.

5. Buy Local When Possible

Shopping at farmers markets or local farm stands can be an affordable way to access fresh, nutritious produce. Because local foods travel shorter distances, they are often harvested closer to peak freshness, which can support better flavor and nutritional value.

6. Choose Store Brands

Store-brand items often offer the same nutritional value as name brands at a lower cost. Checking nutrition labels can help confirm comparable ingredients while keeping grocery totals down.

7. Prepare More Meals at Home

Cooking at home is typically more affordable than dining out or ordering takeout. Home-prepared meals allow for better portion control, fewer added sugars and sodium, and more efficient use of ingredients. Leftovers can also stretch meals into the next day.

8. Incorporate More Plant-Based Proteins

Beans, lentils, peas, tofu, and whole grains are affordable sources of protein and fiber. Including plant-based meals a few times per week can lower food costs while supporting heart health.

9. Buy Seasonal Produce

Seasonal fruits and vegetables are usually more affordable and flavorful due to higher availability. When prices are low, consider freezing extras for later use in soups, smoothies, or stir-fries.

10. Explore Community Food Access Options

Many community-based programs offer food access resources designed to make healthy eating more affordable. These can include food banks, food pantries, mobile food markets, community fridges, and nutrition assistance programs that provide fresh produce and staple items at low or no cost.

Diwali—often spelled Deepavali—is known around the world as the Festival of Lights, but I didn’t truly understand its depth until I had the chance to experience it up close, both in the community and in the workplace. What I witnessed was far more than a holiday; it was a living lesson in history, hope, and inclusion.

Diwali has ancient roots in Hindu tradition and is celebrated by millions of people across India and the global South Asian diaspora. While customs vary across regions and religions, one theme remains constant: the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.

In North India, Diwali is most commonly linked to the epic Ramayana. After 14 years in exile and a fierce battle to rescue his wife Sita from the demon king Ravana, Lord Rama returns to his kingdom of Ayodhya. The people welcome him home by lighting rows of small oil lamps, or diyas, to illuminate the path and celebrate the victory of righteousness. The regions connect Diwali with different stories: Lord Krishna defeating the demon Narakasura in parts of South India, the worship of Goddess Kali in West Bengal, or celebrations of Goddess Lakshmi, who represents prosperity and abundance. This diversity of legends reminds us that Diwali is not a single story, but a tapestry of meanings gathered over centuries.

Despite these variations, the imagery is consistent: homes cleaned and decorated, colorful rangoli patterns drawn at doorways, sweets shared with loved ones, prayers offered, and lamps lit everywhere. Together, these traditions create a powerful metaphor: when we choose compassion, courage, and justice, we bring light into the darkest places)

Experiencing Diwali in community

My understanding of Diwali changed when I had the opportunity to experience the celebration firsthand. Stepping into a Diwali gathering is like walking into a moving painting: marigold garlands draped along doorways, the warm glow of diyas arranged in circles, and children excitedly running around in vibrant traditional clothing. The air is filled with the fragrance of incense and spices, and the sound of laughter, music, and prayer.

What struck me most was the spirit of welcome. Even as a guest from another culture, I was invited to light a lamp, taste homemade sweets, and learn the stories behind the rituals. People didn’t just say “Happy Diwali”; they took time to explain why it was happy—what it meant for their families, their faith, and their sense of identity.

That sense of inclusion of being gently drawn into someone else’s sacred celebration—was as powerful as the history itself. It reminded me that cultural traditions are not meant to be observed from a distance like museum pieces; they are meant to be shared, experienced, and respected.

Diwali in the workplace: inclusion in action

Experiencing Diwali in the workplace added another layer of meaning. In many organizations today, team members decorate common areas with lights and rangoli, host potlucks featuring South Asian dishes, and organize brief teach-ins where colleagues explain the festival’s history and traditions.

What might seem like “just another office celebration” is actually a powerful act of inclusion. When a company makes space for Diwali—alongside other cultural and religious observances—it sends a message: your identity belongs here. Employees who celebrate Diwali see parts of their lives reflected in the workplace, and those who don’t celebrate gain the chance to learn and connect.

In the celebrations I witnessed, leaders didn’t simply sign off on decorations; they showed up. They listened to stories, tried new foods, asked questions respectfully, and participated in lighting lamps. That visible engagement from leadership transforms a cultural moment into an organizational value: we respect and honor the diversity in our midst.

What Diwali teaches all of us

You don’t have to be Hindu, Jain, Sikh, or part of the South Asian diaspora to feel Diwali’s message. At its heart, Diwali asks each of us a simple question: Where do you need more light in your life, your workplace, and your community?

The lamps symbolize more than celebration; they represent commitments:

To choose integrity over convenience

To stand up against injustice, even when it’s uncomfortable

To create environments—teams, families, communities—where everyone can show up as themselves

When I think back to the Diwali celebrations I’ve experienced, I remember the beauty of the lights, the taste of the food, and the joyful energy. But what stays with me most is the feeling: that in that moment, people from many backgrounds came together not just to “observe” a holiday, but to share in a collective hope that light will indeed overcome darkness.

In a world that often feels divided, Diwali offers a gentle but powerful blueprint: clear out what no longer serves us, light a candle of intention, and celebrate the possibility of new beginnings together.

Healthy Blue Louisiana is actively addressing these issues by integrating nutrition into its healthcare services. Through initiatives like the “Food is Medicine” program, the organization partners with healthcare providers to screen patients for food insecurity and supply them with nutritious food supplies, along with nutrition education and connections to local food resources. This approach aims to empower individuals to make informed dietary choices, ultimately improving health outcomes across the state.

The Medicaid plan's president, Dr. Christy Valentine Theard, emphasizes that healthcare is not just about treating illness after it occurs; it's about prevention, education, and breaking down barriers so every person can get the care they deserve. Providing healthy food is one of the most powerful ways to prevent disease and support thriving communities.

“Access to nutritious food is about more than just meals,” Dr.Valentine Theard said. “When people have the resources and information to make healthy choices, we can prevent illness and make a real impact on the well-being of our communities. It’s about supporting families and creating stronger, healthier neighborhoods.”

Dr. Valentine Theard recently shared these insights during the Essence Fest panel discussion, “Healthy Food, Healthy Eating: It’s More Than Looks — Using Food as Medicine,” part of the 2025 Global Black Economic Forum.

The conversation highlighted how nutrition plays a critical role in preventing and managing illnesses, particularly in communities historically affected by health disparities. Panelists emphasized that healthy eating doesn’t require abandoning cultural food traditions; it’s about balance, moderation, and smart preparation methods that preserve flavor while boosting nutritional value.

Panelists agreed that food is a powerful tool for healing and that education and community support are vital. Programs like “produce prescriptions” and local cooking initiatives help make healthy eating achievable for families.

In Louisiana, access to nutritious food remains essential for everyday well-being. Healthy Blue Louisiana continues to meet that need by connecting families with healthy meals, guidance, and long-term wellness resources. As the holidays near, everyone can make a difference—volunteer, donate, or help raise awareness to build a healthier, more resilient Louisiana.

“Leading with Power and Influence,” this dynamic session was moderated by Myiesha Robertson, President of the San Francisco Chapter…

“Leading with Power and Influence,” this dynamic session was moderated by Myiesha Robertson, President of the San Francisco Chapter of the National Black MBA Association. With grace and insight, she guided an esteemed panel of powerhouse women leaders: Mindy Field, Senior Vice President & CFO of e.l.f. Beauty; Lillian Samuel, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area; and LaShandra Hunt, Executive Director and Commercial Banker at JPMorgan Chase & Co.

This panel of the women delivered a masterclass in authenticity, leadership, and intentional power. From the moment the conversation began, it was clear this panel wasn’t about theory, it was about lived experience and practical leadership. Each panelist brought forth personal truths, hard-won lessons, and purposeful insights that reminded every woman in the room of her inherent power.

Power Rooted in Purpose

One of the most profound themes that emerged was the connection between purpose and power. LaShandra Hunt shared how her exposure to underrepresented communities, particularly minority suppliers, expanded her understanding of where her influence could drive change. As a result, she now serves on two minority supplier boards to actively support initiatives that align with her values.

She spoke candidly about showing up with purpose even when you’re the only one in the room.

P & L Group 19th Annual Leadership training conference

Don't miss your chance to join the P&L Group's 19th Annual Virtual National Leadership Recognition Conference—register now to embrace transformation, gain powerful insights, and lead with courage and agility!

Walking the Walk

Mindy Field reminded attendees that it’s not just about what companies say—it’s about what they do. At e.l.f. Beauty, the numbers speak volumes: 67% of the board is made up of women, and half are from diverse backgrounds. That’s not just representation—it’s intentional design. Even more impressive is the alignment of diversity and business performance. “Our commitment to equity hasn’t hurt our bottom line—it’s made us stronger,” she emphasized. The leadership team at e.l.f. understands that embracing diverse perspectives fuels innovation and long-term success.

Mindy’s leadership style reflects the essence of inclusive leadership: she holds monthly open forums with Black employees, creating a safe space for conversation, connection, and belonging. “It’s the small things that matter,” she noted. “When you show up to listen, to connect, and to help others build, that’s where influence begins.”

Living the Mission

For Lillian Samuel, purpose isn’t just a value, it’s her daily mission. As CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area, she is deeply invested in supporting underserved and at-risk youth. She’s not only creating possibilities for young people, she’s modeling a leadership path built on values, wellness, and spirituality.

Lillian also brought up the power of clarity in the workplace. At her organization, every team member publicly shares their personal values, a practice that fosters deeper alignment, transparency, and shared commitment. “Your bold intent should reflect your values,” she said, encouraging women to be unapologetic about integrating their whole selves into their leadership.

Values as Compass

When Myiesha asked the panel how they live their values while manifesting their purpose, the responses were deeply personal. “Choose your top five values,” she urged the audience. “They are your guideposts.” Whether it's courage, compassion, integrity, or balance, naming your values helps you align with your purpose and identify when environments are either in sync or out of step with who you are.

The conversation also turned toward work environments and the importance of choosing spaces where your values can thrive. “Sometimes coming from nothing gives you the courage to take risks,” one panelist shared. “Don’t be afraid to pivot. You may find your magic in a smaller company that welcomes your ideas and input into the culture.”

The Power of Support

When asked what support looks like in their lives, Lillian opened up about the powerful sisterhoods that sustain her: from the 9 Black women CEOs in her national affiliate network to her book club, family, and long-standing circle of friends. “Mindy says, my village holds me up,” she shared. But she was also honest about the ongoing challenge of balance. “We often over-index on working too hard. I’m still learning the power of saying no.”

Her husband, she shared, is a constant rock of support—helping her stay grounded and reminding her of the importance of setting an example for their children. “I’m living it, working it, and believing in it,” she said with conviction.

Words to the Next Generation

When the panel reflected on advice for future women leaders, the message was clear: lead with intention. Be thoughtful about how you show up, who you support, and how you build. “Trust and listen,” LaShandra offered. “Help others build sustainable relationships. Influence is about being present, not just powerful.”

Call to Action: Build, Move, and Protect the Ladder

The panel closed with a powerful call to action for women in every stage of their journey:

Be intentional, this is your life.

Know the power of saying no—it protects your yes.

Ask yourself: Are you building the ladder, moving the ladder, or standing in the way of someone climbing it?

Give yourself permission to be selfish, to rest, to recharge, and to be kind to yourself.

This session was more than a panel. It was a reckoning, a reminder, and a roadmap. In a world where leadership can sometimes feel performative, these women are proof that real power is built on purpose, lived through values, and strengthened in community.

As we move forward in our own paths, may we hold their words close and continue to lift as we climb.

Discover how Ashanti Abdullah’s Ternwheel is changing how independent artists make money in today’s music industry.

Ashanti Abdullah’s path into software design didn’t follow the typical Stanford or Harvard cookie-cutter mold-his path was far less conventional. Abdullah, a former DJ-turned-manager, spent years watching artists lose money on tour—consistently, quietly, and unnecessarily.

“There’s a study that found touring artists lose over $1.16 billion a year to inefficiencies,” Abdullah said. “And nobody blinks. That number told me everything. I didn’t want to fix it—I wanted to recover it.”

When he led the largest independent hip hop festivals like Soundset and Ryhmsayers he noticed after budgeting, the artists would come home with a 32 percent margin but landing at 12.

“That’s not miscalculation. That’s leakage. Someone’s skimming, or something’s broken. And no one was tracking it in real time, “ says Abdullah.

No centralized system. No live tracking. No transparency. Artists often left with confusion at the end of every tour.

Abdullah moved to Silicon Valley 10 years ago to launch Ternwheel, a touring SaaS platform designed not for investors or product managers, but for performers who live out of suitcases.

“On your first day working at Ternwheel, you get a pair of Jordans,” Abdullah said. “No matter who you are or where you come from. That’s how we move. It’s about culture. We’re not adapting to tech—we’re making tech adapt to us.”

The software is made for artists, managers, road crews. The ones who wake up in a city without remembering how they got there. Abdullah didn’t build tech to impress Silicon Valley. He built a tool to empower the artist.

“Grieves tours 200 days a year. He texts me ideas constantly,” Abdullah said. “One week it was weather alerts for each tour stop. We added it.”

Before software, Abdullah worked on the road. He DJ’d for Prof and Manifest. He managed artists. He ran routing, handled money, coordinated travel.

“Eventually I realized I was better at the business than the turntables,” he said. “So I fired myself as a DJ and hired myself as a manager.”

“There were tools like Master Tour,” he said. “But they weren’t built to protect artists’ profit. They were glorified calendars. Useful, but useless when it came to knowing who spent what, when, and why” says Abdullah.

Ternwheel changed that. Artists now see real-time P&Ls while on the road. Tour managers can issue spending cards. Every dollar is tracked. And because Abdullah lived the chaos firsthand, he knows what matters.

“One of our artists comes home with 21% more now, just by using the system. Nothing fancy. Just less waste.” Ternwheel is a decision-making system that shows artists exactly where their money is going while they’re still on the road.

His philosophy is a precise calculation, “Managers get paid on gross. Artists get paid on net. So if no one’s watching the backend, artists are the ones getting screwed.”

After self-funding with $250,000 from a longtime friend, Abdullah hit a wall.

“I pitched over 100 VCs. Nothing landed,” he said. “Then one of them pointed me to TxO. They called on a Saturday. I was in the program by Monday.”

That program—a16z Talent x Opportunity Initiative (TxO) at Andreessen Horowitz—connected Abdullah to people who understood the weight of culture.

“Kofi, Trey, the whole TxO team—they don’t chase hype” he says. That hands-on approach helped him survive a brutal funding process, proving TxO as a strategic alignment to boost capital and gain larger access.

Abdullah said, “They weren’t trying to turn me into a tech bro-they respect culture.”

“That team backs founders who don’t come from the Stanford pipeline. They saw what I was doing, and they understood why it mattered.”

“Marc Andreessen hasn’t seen it yet, but Ben Horowitz? He gets it. He runs his whole operation like it’s a hip-hop label. That’s why I trust them.”

Ternwheel didn’t launch quietly. It dropped at South by Southwest. “We finished building the product on a Saturday and started selling it that Tuesday,” he said. “No soft beta. Just go.”

Now Abdullah is preparing to roll out banking integration—direct artist accounts, spending cards for crew, and live reconciliation during the tour.

“Every transaction connects to your P&L,” he said. “You don’t wait until the settlement to find out you’re broke.”

And the vision doesn’t stop at music.

“This works for Broadway tours, sports teams, arena shows,” he said. “Anywhere you move people from city to city. That whole world runs on spreadsheets and duct tape. We’re giving it infrastructure” Abdullah says.

He doesn’t see himself as a founder in the conventional sense.

“I don’t code. I don’t wear Allbirds. I’m not 26,” he said. “But I know how artists get robbed. And I know how to stop it.”

At Ternwheel, there are no Zoom check-ins, no slide decks about “mission statements.” There’s only execution.

“You work when and how you want—as long as the work is done. We’re not a startup. We’re a results-based company. Just deliver.”

Abdullah’s approach is direct, tactical, and uncompromising.

“I came close to walking away,” he admitted. “I was tired. I’d been bootstrapping this thing. But I didn’t stop. I knew we had something.”

What Abdullah is building isn’t some ‘disruption story.’ It’s a correction. For artists. For culture. For everyone who’s ever come back from tour with empty pockets and no receipts.

And if your joining the Ternwheel team. Yes, you still get the Jordans.

WASHINGTON, D.C., [July 08, 2025] — Howard University Faculty Practice Plan (HUFPP) and Howard University Hospital (HUH) are proud to announce a groundbreaking partnership with the Dynasty Interactive Screen Community's (DISC) Health Equity Action Lab (HEAL) that will enhance public access to critical health information and expand health education outreach locally in the DMV (DC, Maryland, and Virginia) area and on a national level. HEAL is an initiative of DISC Health. This initiative was spearheaded and led by DISC representative Dr. Lawrence Jones II, the National Director of DISC HEAL and the Founder and CEO of Biotechnology Health Management and Care LLC. Howard University Faculty Practice Plan and Howard University Hospital will expand health initiatives and awareness by promoting and distributing preventive health information, as well as news about active aging and healthy lifestyles, impacting the community both on campus and in community clinics. Through this collaboration, HUH and HUFPP will now leverage DISC's network of more than 800 indoor digital media screens regionally, including access to 500,000 monthly viewers across the Washington, D.C. region alone.

These digital displays are strategically placed in high-traffic community hubs such as restaurants, salons, community centers, and local businesses, making health information more visible and accessible in everyday settings. The DISC platform features multimedia content that is both expert-curated and culturally relevant, covering a wide range of topics, including preventive care, mental health, nutrition, and chronic disease management. With more than four million monthly viewers nationwide, DISC enables Howard's providers and educators to connect directly with communities and other underserved populations, delivering targeted campaigns, including virtual screenings, video education, and branded health content, helping to strengthen relationships and improve trust with communities that have historically faced barriers to healthcare access. "This partnership represents a bold and transformative step in our mission to close the health equity gap," said Vincent Orange Jr., CEO of the Howard University Faculty Practice Plan.

Mr. Orange elaborates by stating that "By bringing reliable, expert health content directly into the places where our community gathers, we are not only increasing awareness—we are empowering individuals with the knowledge to make healthier decisions. He further adds that "This collaboration is Howard at its best — leading, educating, and advocating." "DISC is proud to align with a nationally respected institution like Howard University," said Dr. Frederick Echols, DISC HEAL team member. Mr. Orange and the DISC HEAL team believe that "Together, we are amplifying trusted voices in healthcare and delivering content that speaks to the lived experiences of the communities we serve. This collaboration allows us to bring meaningful, life-changing health education directly to the people who need it most — where they live, work, and connect."

By combining Howard's legacy of care and advocacy with DISC's dynamic technology, the institutions are advancing a shared vision for a more informed and health-literate society. Together, they are building a future where every community has access to the tools and education needed to lead healthier, more equitable lives.

Disability Inclusion Source: DMBA ILI 2023 Workplace inclusion means more than just meeting a quota—it’s about creating an environment where everyone, including people with disabilities, feels valued, respected, and empowered to succeed. This kind of culture is essential for building a truly supportive and diverse workforce. Yet, many people with disabilities hesitate to disclose their conditions, often fearing discrimination or a lack of understanding.

This highlights the urgent need to prioritize disability inclusion through concrete actions like offering reasonable accommodations, providing diversity training, and fostering genuine respect. Having recruiters who specialize in engaging with people with disabilities can also make a huge difference in creating a more inclusive hiring process. Embracing these inclusive practices not only supports employees with disabilities but also enriches the entire workplace, making it a more compassionate, equitable, and dynamic space for everyone.

The US census has improved their ability to capture generations and identity in the labor force; and most of the demographics aligns with the DMBA Index except for People With Disabilities (PWD) at 19.1 percent (census) and 5 percent in the workforce; .2 percent decline since 2022.

Promoting Inclusion 67% of persons with disabilities want a disability friendly environment.
Since 1980, the Abrons Arts Center located in the Lower East Side has provided burgeoning early-career artists with funding, resources, and opportunities to professionally develop their craft through their AIRspace residency programs. Dozens of dancers and musicians like Cleo Reed and Symara Sarai have graduated from the AIRspace Performance Residency with the goal of sharing their art with a wider audience. As a part of the residency program, they have each produced and shared their works in progress productions with the public throughout 2025.

Cleo Reed, 26, said that the program has allowed them to make a living as a full-time artist. Reed is a multidisciplinary artist hailing from Washington Heights and a musician. In 2021, they started to produce performance art pieces with their original music. “I feel really seen by Abrons. It’s really easy to generate ideas with them and the community,” said Reed.

Reed’s performance style cannot be described through typical ballet, hip-hop, or contemporary influences, but a personification and full embodiment of each character plays in their performance. As a part of the residency program, Reed puts on a solo show titled cuntry:wip that addresses labor both in the body and the workplace with their own music as the score.

“I’m enjoying the process of just making things,” said Reed. “ Being able to wake and think about [my art] every day feels like the blessing I didn’t even know that I needed. I have a lot of momentum inside of me.”

Symara Sarai, 30, says that being a part of residency has been a long-time goal of hers. Sarai, a Portland Oregon native, currently resides in Brooklyn. Since the age of 10, Sarai has been dancing and performing on stages from New York to Beijing. With a BFA in Dance from SUNY Purchase, she works as a choreographer and artist. “It’s been incredible. The team is amazing and extremely supportive. I feel like they make a lot of space for artists to be authentically themselves.”

Conceived and choreographed by Sarai, Angelic Architectures brings together three dancers—including herself—in a collaborative experiment that showcases the inner anarchy of Black queer femininity blown out across the stage space. This experiment is one of the first of Sarai’s career, as she mostly performed as a solo artist prior to the residency. “I consider myself to be an improvisational artist. I work a lot with spontaneous performance,” said Sarai. What is seen as a challenge to some, spontaneity is what she calls a “radical push-up.”

“I use [Improvisation] as a tool and structure,” she notes.

While being a resident of the Abrons Arts Center is an achievement of its own, Sarai hopes that she can turn the performance into a tour, bringing the experiment to a global stage.

For Reed, continuing to produce their own music is probably likely on the horizon. “I feel like life’s a circle,” they laughed. “I’m just going to make more projects. That’s about it.”

Summer brings with it sunshine, family barbecues, and community picnics, but also a heightened risk of foodborne illness. As temperatures rise, so does the chance that harmful bacteria will grow on improperly handled foods, threatening the health of individuals and communities. While many associate food safety with restaurant kitchens, the truth is that most foodborne illnesses occur in home and informal settings, like the family picnic table.

Understanding the basics of safe food preparation, storage, and handling is essential to protecting your health and the health of those you love.

Why Summer Poses a Higher Risk

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 48 million Americans get sick from foodborne illnesses each year, with over 3,000 resulting in death (CDC, 2023). While foodborne illness is a year-round concern, summer heat and humidity create the perfect environment for bacteria such as Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria to multiply rapidly. Combine that with outdoor gatherings, limited refrigeration, and undercooked foods, and the risks increase dramatically.

Common Culprits at Summer Picnics

Certain foods are more prone to contamination, especially when kept at unsafe temperatures or improperly prepared:

Grilled meats and poultry: Undercooked burgers and chicken can carry Salmonella or Campylobacter.

Potato salad and coleslaw: These contain mayonnaise or dairy products that spoil quickly if not refrigerated.

Fresh fruits and vegetables: While nutritious, they can carry E. coli or Listeria if not properly washed.

Unpasteurized beverages: Homemade juices or milk may harbor bacteria without pasteurization.

Safe Food Handling Tips for Summer Gatherings

The good news? Foodborne illness is preventable. Follow the Four Steps to Food Safety recommended by the USDA and CDC:

1. Clean

Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling food.

Rinse fresh produce under running water, even if it will be peeled.

Clean coolers, cutting boards, and utensils before and after use.

2. Separate

Keep raw meats away from ready-to-eat foods like salads, bread, and fruits.

Use separate cutting boards and utensils for raw meat and vegetables.

Don’t reuse marinades or sauces that have come into contact with raw meat.

3. Cook

Use a food thermometer to ensure safe internal temperatures:

Poultry: 165°F

Ground beef: 160°F

Pork and fish: 145°F

Avoid partially cooking meat in advance, as bacteria can survive and multiply if meat is not fully cooked.

4. Chill

Keep cold foods cold, below 40°F, and hot foods hot, above 140°F.

Use insulated coolers with plenty of ice or ice packs.

Don’t leave perishable food out for more than 2 hours, or 1 hour if the temperature is above 90°F (USDA, 2022).

Protecting the Most Vulnerable

Foodborne illness can be dangerous for anyone, but it’s especially serious for:

Young children

Pregnant individuals

Older adults

People with weakened immune systems

A mild case of food poisoning for one person can mean hospitalization for another. Practicing safe food handling is a public health responsibility, not just a personal precaution.

Public Health and Community Action

Local health departments can play a vital role in educating the public through:

Public service announcements during summer months

Handouts at community centers and parks

Collaborations with schools and local organizations to spread awareness

Community organizers and city officials should ensure that public picnic spaces include access to clean water, safe waste disposal, and shaded areas to reduce spoilage risks during community events.

The joy of summer should not be spoiled by something as preventable as foodborne illness. A few simple precautions—washing hands, keeping foods at the right temperature, and cooking meats thoroughly—can keep your family safe and your summer memories healthy.

So, whether you're hosting a neighborhood cookout or packing lunch for a day at the park, remember: safe food is shared food. Let’s make this summer one of connection, celebration, and good health for all.

LOS ANGELES/ST. LOUIS – June 2025 – Music is a powerful vessel for storytelling, connection, and healing, and no one embodies this more than genre-defying artist Aviana And The Pure Root. This summer, Aviana invites listeners and viewers on a mystical, multi-sensory exploration with her highly anticipated project, Love Spells, a three-part short film and music EP that intertwines themes of ancestral healing, spiritual rebirth, and romantic liberation.

Two years in the making, Love Spells is more than a musical experience; it’s a deep, emotional narrative about past-life romance, karmic cycles, and the ultimate return to self-love. Blending soul, rock, reggae, and Afrobeat influences, the project is a celebration of Black love and spirituality like no other.

Celebrate with Aviana

To celebrate this artistic milestone, Aviana will host an exclusive screening and artist talk at the Regional Arts Commission of St. Louis on Sunday, July 13, from 3–5 PM.

A Vision Rooted in Spirituality and Healing

“Love Spells was born out of the desire to reimagine Black love with a lens of joy, intention, and expansiveness,” Aviana says. “There is so much pain and pessimism in how Black romance is portrayed in entertainment. I wanted to create something that celebrates it with more depth and positivity.”

Each song and video in the trilogy reveals a fresh chapter in a mystical story about breaking patterns, reclaiming purpose, and manifesting a true life partner through the practice of self-love. The project itself is a labor of love, made possible by a $7,500 grant from the Regional Arts Commission of St. Louis, community fundraising, and partnerships with organizations like The Mildred Cursh Foundation, raising a total of $15,000 for its creation.

Crucially, the trilogy bridges the Black diasporic experience through its filming locations in Malibu, Venice, and Accra. Aviana beautifully merges indigenous spiritual themes with universal poetry, creating a powerful intersection between culture, identity, and romance.

Healing Through Music

Aviana’s work has always centered on the unique interplay of music and healing, which shines brightly in Love Spells. Her unmistakable blend of soul, rock, and spiritual resonance has positioned her as a leader in spiritual alternative rock. While her EP PROPHECY established this direction, her recent single “Dark Creation” (co-written with Michael Vest) takes it further with Ethio-jazz and psychedelic rock elements.

“Through each track, I wanted to explore the idea of recognizing lovers from previous lifetimes,” Aviana tells us. “But the key is understanding that many of these connections are lessons. They’re patterns and cycles we’re meant to break rather than repeat. Ultimately, this project is about returning to yourself and aligning with the right partner from that space of self-love.”

Live Performances This Summer
